As I have stated in a previous message, Green Lake County had no, zero, traffic fatalities in 2008. However, this is of little consolation to the families and friends of the other citizens who died on our Nations roadways last year. To further our efforts in saving lives on our highways I have directed deputies to again participate in the “Click It or Ticket” campaign from May 18 to 31. You will see Green Lake County Sheriff patrols enforcing traffic laws on numerous roadways in the County. Our “Click It or Ticket” message will be clear. If you are stopped by a deputy and are not wearing a seatbelt, you will get a ticket whether you are driving or just a passenger.
Some statistics from the Wisconsin DOT support my commitment to this program:
- Traffic crashes are the leading cause of death nationwide for people ages 4 to 34.
- On average, a driver age 19 or under in Wisconsin is killed or injured in a traffic crash every hour.
- In Wisconsin, 73% of nighttime fatalities were unrestrained.
- Wisconsin’s safety belt use rate is approximately 74% which is one of the lowest in the nation. The national average is 83%.
